TW Steel Slim Line Collection

by Michael Wolfe

The Slim Line models are fitted with a large sapphire crystal measuring almost 40mm in diameter. The size of the dial opening will provide an illusion that the watch is actually larger than 45mm. The dial opening is also a feature the Slim Line Collection may have a leg up on some of the higher end thin watches, because one should be able to view the features of the dial much more clearly. Beneath the sapphire crystal is a gorgeous large Sunray black dial. The dial is clean and uncluttered with each feature being quite legible. Typical branding is present on the dial above and below center dial with perfect font based on the size of the dial.

An aspect found on the dial, which is typical a feature seen on higher end watches, is the use of applied markers. Oversized numerals perfect for the dial size are present at the 12 and 6 with spike-type markers at all other hour positions. All of the applied markers have a high polished finish to match the case finishing adding to the elegant and dressy appearance of the watch. The handset is also high polished corresponding with the dial markers and case finishing. There is no lume on this model, which is really the only disappointment about the dial; a very minor one, as this model will not be used for diving. However, even though the model is obviously not a dive watch, in darkened conditions, telling the time could be a challenge. The usage of some lume dots using white C1 Superluminova surrounding the perimeter of the dial would be perfect and maintain the elegant look of this model.

I normally do not have much to say in regards to a case back, unless it is some sort of display back or a cool design, but I am quite pleased with the quality and detail on the Slim Line model. The case back is screwed into the case, providing a nice feature to the watch. The case back is also heavily engraved like the crown, not etched. The TW Steel name is engraved at the center and various specification information is engraved surrounding the outer portion of the case back. Beneath the case back is a Miyota 1S13 quartz movement. I am not overly familiar with this movement, but can report that the accuracy is what anyone would expect from a quartz movement. Plus, the second hand is very precise landing on the hour markers. I would personally love to see a Miyota 9015 automatic movement in this watch if it was at all possible. Of course a 9015 movement may be too large for the design, but I can wish, right? I refrain from going into the debate of automatic versus quartz, but the lack of an automatic movement could impact the draw toward this model in some circles.

The bracelet is another stunning feature of the Slim Line collection. Consisting of a 9-link type design with solid end links, the bracelet measures 22mm at the lug tapering to 20mm and the clasp. The bracelet has alternating brushed and high polished aspects, providing a great contrast of finishes throughout the watch. The links are connected using friction pins and measure approximately 3mm in thickness. The clasp is a dual deploying style with TW Steel branding at the opening. Overall, the bracelet is fantastic and well made, but a push button deploying clasp would make opening and closing slightly easier.
